We all deserve to live in a home that allows us to maintain our independence, have choice and control, and feel safe. The lack of accessible and affordable housing across London makes this far from reality for many Disabled Londoners.

Merton CIL has long expressed concern about the lack of accessible housing in Merton, which is why we are supporting Inclusion London's campaign to raise accessibility standards for new build homes in London.

Inclusion London have written an open letter to the Government demanding they raise accessibility standards for new build homes. You can watch a BSL interpretation of the open letter below.

Merton CIL, along with a number of other Deaf and Disabled people's organisations, have signed the letter in solidarity. The letter urges the Government to champion accessible and affordable housing and:

  • mandate the M4(2) adaptable and accessible homes as the baseline standard for all new build homes by the end of 2024;
  • set a minimum target of 10% of all new build homes to be M4(3) wheelchair user homes by the end of this year;
  • ensure that the majority of accessible homes are built in the social rented sector.

Inclusion London have also invited Disabled Londoners to join them at Westminster for a day of action on Monday 29th July 2024 at 12pm. Join us to push the Government to commit to creating more accessible and affordable homes for our community!
