Disabled people pay the price for vandalism at Haydons Road Station

22nd September 2021

Merton CIL is disappointed to learn that plans for step-free access at Haydons Road Station have been blocked by Govia Thameslink because of concerns it would lead to vandalism and anti-social behaviour.

‘It’s basically penalising all Disabled people who might use the station because of the actions of others,’ comment Michael Turner, Merton CIL’s Policy and Strategy Manager.

Merton CIL has learned of the decision from Merton council, who were told by Govia Thameslink and Network Rail in response to enquires about the planning permission that had been given for the changes back in 2018.

Michael Turner continued: ‘We find hard to see how it has taken so long for them to reach this negative decision to continue to exclude a whole section of the community rather than finding solutions to the security issues.’

Merton CIL has contacted Govia Thameslink and asked them to reconsider their decision. We also understand that the Council is encouraging them to find a way to open up the new entrance.
