The Labour Government’s announcements about “welfare reforms” to “get Britain working” are causing great anxiety amongst people who receive benefits. The headlines about possible changes to how someone is assessed for Personal Independence Payment (PIP) and Universal Credit (UC) are deeply unsettling for those who have had to put up a fight to claim the support that they need.
If you are worried, Merton CIL would like you to know that the announcements are, at this point, simply a set of ideas. There will be no overnight changes to the benefits system, and it can take months and years for a government to make the kind of changes that are being talked about. Please rest assured that we have your back. We will keep you updated, try to answer any questions that you have, and help you to speak up.
Merton CIL will continue to work with other organisations to unpick exactly what is being proposed, and to oppose any developments which will make life for Disabled people more difficult. In particular, we are persisting in trying to organise meetings with the two MPs for the borough, to ensure that the views of Disabled people are heard.
