Transport for All were contacted by Transport for London about proposed changes to London Road / Central Road / Epsom Road in Merton. Alongside some quite sensible changes which should benefit all road users, they proposed to introduce shared footway, so cyclists could cycle on the pavement.
MCIL felt that older and disabled pedestrians particularly are put at risk when shared space is introduced, and can find using shared space a frightening experience. For visually impaired and blind people, it is positively dangerous and can put people off from using an area.
In November Transport for London agreed with all the local groups who spoke out against the proposal and they will ow NOT to introduce shared space for pedestrians and cyclists – hooray! Instead they have pledged to put in proper cycle lanes in the new year.
